I am in no way a foodie nor expert in food. But I love to eat and enjoy eating out. My gastronomic experiences were quite varied, especially back when I lived in London. Hence when we moved in to our house in Paddock Wood, I started my quest to find my favourite local restaurant.
In this post I talk about my recent dining experience at The Poet in Matfield.
Having given birth quite (but not quite) recently, it had been a little bit challenging to find places to dine out. But going to The Poet was a very good experience, considering it was my birthday the other day.
Going to The Poet, you get greeted by the lovely staff at the bar. They will show you to your table (make sure you book your table as they get booked up ok advance). For my birthday’s meal, we opted to order from the a la carte menu.
For my starter, I ordered Confit Suffolk Chicken Wings, Wilted Baby Gem, Chicken Fat Crumb, Parmesan. What I loved about this dish was how tender the chicken was. I like the blend of spices used and the flavour of the chicken itself. The baby gem lettuce was still crisp and fresh, despite being wilted as described in the menu.

For my mains, I had Romney Marsh Lamb, Lamb Bolognese Croquette, Asparagus, Bacon, Pea & Feta ‘Française’. You see, I don’t eat lamb that much so I don’t have a lot to say apart from I enjoyed the flavours and I liked how it tasted. The croquette was flavourful, the pea & feta were tasty too! I’m not a huge fan of feta cheese but eating this with the rest of my meal was enjoyable. The jus that came with my meal was also delicious. The only thing I didn’t like that much was the asparagus was slightly overcooked but overall, I would order this meal again.

I am a dessert person and because it’s my birthday, I also ordered dessert. I went for Yum Yum’, Tiger Nut Milk (Orxata) Ice Cream, Apricots, Crème Diplomat. I loved the hlend of flavours. I thought the tiger nut milk ice cream was something new to me and the apricots mixed with the Crème Diplomat was delightful. Only thing I didn’t dig was the yum yum was too doughy for me and a tad bit dry. Otherwise, it was a lovely dessert when eaten together.

Overall, the dining experience was lovely. I enjoyed the food and staff were friendly and attentive of our needs. They have assigned us to a secluded area of the restaurant which was perfect for me to breastfeed my baby. I was able to use the breastfeeding cover that I bought from Amazon (link here) and felt comfortable about the entire experience. After her feed, baby was comfortably sleeping at her Mama’s and Papa’s carrycot (Can I just say how convenient this carrycot/pushchair is for using when we go out to dinner. If you’re interested, I posted a link here).
So far, since moving to Paddock Wood, The Poet at Matfield is my favourite restaurant. It has the fine dining experience I quite liked but has the cosy and comfortable atmosphere of a local pub.
I added some other photos below for the lovely birthday meal I had at The Poet Matfield
